Rampant Colls put Leeds to the sword

Pontefract Collieries 4:0 Leeds Carnegie

Northern Counties East League Division One

Saturday 23rd April 2011

After a pretty even start to the match, the game burst into life when Colls took the lead on 16 mins: Warren Redord scoring his 1st goal for the senior team with a clinical finish across the keeper into the bottom corner.

After a recent poor run - mainly due to injuries – the goal seemed to lift the Colls, who grew in confidence. We did not have long to wait before the Colls doubled their lead, when the livewire Danny Frost, with only 20 mins on the clock, sidestepped two of the Carnegie defenders before spinning and creating enough space to fire into the bottom corner.

With the midfield taking control and the defence looking solid Colls were now playing some great football and were unlucky not to extend their lead on 38 mins when Frost showed great skill to control a clearance on his chest and hit a 1st time volley that was well saved by the visitors keeper.

Colls started the second half playing some fine football and after a fine run by Frost who was causing the visiting defence all sorts of problems were rewarded with their third goal on 60 mins when he slid the ball to Redford who scored his second of the game.

Colls were experiencing much of the play and it seemed only a matter of time before they increased their lead. Although Colls may and perhaps should have scored more we had to wait until the 85 minute when Stephan Furness showed some great skill before laying the ball off to Hassan Ahmed who hit a great shot into the bottom corner.

Although four goals up with minutes to play the Colls did not rest on their laurels and still created another chance where Warren Redford was unlucky to see a powerfull shot cannon back off the crossbar with the keeper beaten that would have been a well justified hat trick.

With the game coming to the end Leeds Carnegie were able to get past the resolute back four for perhaps their only real chance on 88 mins but Lee Kelsey who had made his debut in goal made a fantastic save to deny the visitors a consolation goal. Although the score line would suggest that a forward would receive all the accolades Man of that match went to Jack Hill who was outstanding in the centre of defence.

Manager Brendon Ormsby was delighted with his team after three poor, disjointed performances. Indvidually, his players performed well, but it will be the team play – particularly controlling possession for large periods against one of the best passing teams in the NCEL – that pleased him most from this excellent display.
