Pontefract Collieries’ pre-season campaign gathered pace with a routine win against West Yorkshire League side Kippax FC, who gave the Colls a tough work-out on a good surface.

Two goals from Rob Oldham, plus another from ex-Leeds Carnegie star Greig McGrory saw the White Rose Stadium side home and hosed, before substitute Jamie Stobdale scored a late, but well deserved, consolation for the visitors.

It took Pontefract just three minutes to open the scoring, a fantastic turn on the spot by Liam Ormsby was followed by a lovely pass to David Brown, who raced away before firing an effort that visiting stopper Chris Hogg did well to palm away, but ROB OLDHAM was on hand to tap in.

If the Colls thought this game would be a walk in the park, they were sorely mistaken as Kippax played some good football and passed the ball around well. Indeed, only a few minutes after the hosts had taken the lead, Lewis Dalton missed a guilt edged chance for the visitors, hitting over the bar from a couple of yards out after the defence had failed to clear.

For the next ten minutes or so, Kippax were creating the better chances as it seemed that Ponte’s tempo had slowed. Joe Thorpe was unlucky to be brought back for offside, before Richard Jackson hit a well timed scissor kick in the area that just cleared Lee Kelsey’s goal.

Ponte had to react to this, and they did with Rob Oldham starting the move which saw him leave one defender in his wake, before setting up David Brown whose half volley came back off the post. Unfortunately, it wouldn’t have mattered as the assistant’s flag was raised on the far side.

Most of Ponte’s attacking threat throughout the game came down the left hand side, and in particular from new signing Rob Oldham who looks like being a very exciting player for the Colls this season.

Just before the break, Hogg produced a wonderful point blank save to deny Oldham doubling his, and Pontefract’s, lead having saved Greig McGrory’s initial effort.

The second half started with Ponte having the majority of possession, but just failing to find that killer final ball. Greig McGrory got beyond the defence and put in a weighted cross to his brother Scott, but his flick on just didn’t have the necessary power to trouble Hogg in the Kippax goal.

Ponte’s flying winger Ryan Poskitt then had a couple of chances to open his account for this season, firstly with a header which just cleared the crossbar, then a fierce shot which was blocked by the defence for a corner, which came to nothing.

Midway through the second half and Ponte made the game safe. A great ball over the top to substitute Warren Redford saw the Under-19s player race away from the defence, before unselfishly squaring the ball to the better placed GREIG MCGRORY who tapped the ball home from around six yards.

Redford was picking up plenty of the ball, a one-on-one with Hogg saw the ‘keeper come out on top, before a Poskitt cross was narrowly diverted the wrong side of the post from the youngster.

A third goal soon arrived for Pontefract, this time ROB OLDHAM did manage to double his tally. A cross from the edge of the box was inches away from finding Redford, however both the striker and the wrong-footed ‘keeper couldn’t get to the ball, which sailed into the back of the net without the aid of a deflection.

With moments to go before the full-time whistle, Kippax got the rewards their efforts deserved. With the defence backing off, JAMIE STOBDALE produced a sublime finish from 20 yards out, hitting a wonderful effort to which the previously unbeatable Kelsey could do nothing about.

With time running out, there was one last chance for the Colls with trialist Brian Johnson bursting beyond the defence, ending up one-on-one again with Hogg, but the Kippax ‘keeper once again made a great save.

This was a good work-out for Pontefract, with notable contributions from Rob Oldham, who seemed at the heart of everything good the Colls did going forward, Connor Rollinson who did a wonderful job in defence after coming on at the break, Liam Ormsby who marshalled the side well in the middle of the park, and Warren Redford who only looks like getting better despite his tender years.
