Pontefract Collieries Reserves side comfortably beat Barnsley league side Wombwell Main in midweek with a team mainly filled with Under-19s, but bolstered by several first-team players seeking an extra yard of sharpness for the kick-off of the NCEL campaign on Saturday.

The Reserve side, which is being managed by John Redford this season, was watched by first team manager Brendon Ormsby from the stand, as Ryan Poskitt, Will Ramsey and James Hicks had run-outs alongside many of Redford’s own U19 Academy charges. With Hassan Ahmed, Leon Guest, Tom King, Jack Hill and Callum Green all experiencing first team football during the 2010-11 Season and every one of the 16 players carrying realistic hopes of first team football during the forthcoming campaign, the team had a strong look about it.

And so it turned out. It took just under 10 minutes for the Colls to take the lead, a poor clearance from the visiting goalkeeper saw Ryan Poskitt hit a curling effort from around 20 yards which had the stopper on the back foot.

A free-kick from just outside the area was then taken by Will Ramsey, whose cross ended up beating everyone including the goalkeeper to nestle in the far corner of the net to double Ponte’s lead.

The third goal owed much to Ramsey again, his perfect through ball to James Hicks saw the striker confidently roll the ball into the back of the net, before a solo goal from Leon Guest saw him beat a couple of would-be tacklers before keeping a cool head to confidently shoot home.

With Pontefract playing some super possession football, the home team were in complete control of the game. Redford and Ormsby must have both been pleased to see the results of their training regimes bearing fruit in the Reserve team, as the “Ormsby” style of play starts to permeate throughout the club.

The second half was pretty much the same as the first, however Ponte’s strikers continuously struck shots straight at the visiting stopper. In fact, Wombwell actually pulled a goal back – Ponte were caught out on the left side of defence, Darrell Smith running through and denying Tom King the chance of a clean sheet.

It was a confident performance, which understandably was more subdued in the second half due to the nature of the scoreline, however there were impressive performances from Kieran Wright who belied his age with some good touches, and Will Ramsey who put in a terrific performance throughout and will have done his case for a starting berth against Dinnington no harm whatsoever. Jack Hill was as solid as ever at the back and when called upon, while King could be relied upon to deny the visiting strikers.
