“Keep battling – and play some football!”
Having implored his team to “fight for the right to play football” before Saturday’s win against Albion Sports, Brendon Ormsby has applauded the attitude shown by his players. However, while encouraging them to show the same fighting spirit in tonight’s fixture against Shirebrook Town, he has reminded them that, having fought for the right to play football, they should not forget to do so!
Writing in his programme notes for tonight’s match, Ormsby writes: “Having backed ourselves into a bit of a corner with three defeats, I was really pleased that the players managed to fight their way out of that corner on Saturday. It was good to get a win, although the football was not the best we have played this season. It was a hard-fought game, Albion were a big, strong side, and there were some crunching tackles, plenty of tension and a scuffle or two. In fact, given the nature of the game, I thought that it was a credit to the players that they kept their heads and found a way to win. In truth, it was an ugly game, a long way from the style of football we aspire towards, but we stood up for ourselves, battled hard to keep a clean sheet, and scored the only goal to win it.
“As far as tonight is concerned, I hope that the clean sheet and the win give us some of our confidence back. Before Saturday’s game, I laid down the gauntlet to our players, asking them to show that they had the character to “fight for the right to play football”. To their great credit, they took up the challenge and did exactly that. My one regret from the game is that, having fought so hard, they then forgot the bit about playing football! The performance was still way short of what our lads are capable of, and short of what they have produced a few weeks ago.

“Tonight, I will be looking for the team to build on Saturday: to match the commitment of Saturday, and to add the quality shown earlier in the season. When they trust themselves and their team-mates, the lads are a good football team, but until they start to believe this themselves they will not start proving it.
“Myself, Nicky and Dunc are fed up of telling them they can play the game – the lads need to start proving it to themselves, and the way to do this is to cut out the simple, basic errors they have made in the last couple of games, and make the right decisions when in possession, to make sure we keep the ball and use it wisely.
“If the lads can show the spirit and energy of Saturday – particularly in the first 5, 15, 20 minutes when they will need to match Shirebrook in terms of workrate and effort – then they should give themselves the space they need to play some football.”
The match against Shirebrook Town kicks off at 7:45pm at The White Rose Stadium.
