Players profile: Tom Robinson

Tom Robinson is a classy, intelligent centre-half, who has been an ever-present in the first team during the 2011-12 season.

Despite the excellent form of Johnny Forsyth and Nick Handley at centre half in the closing months of last season, the team was enhanced in this area by the arrival of Tom Robinson in pre-season. With club captain Handley struggling to shake off a long-term injury, Robinson first formed strong partnerships with first Forsyth, whose departure to London meant that Robinson quickly found himself thrust into the role of “elder statesman” at centre-half. His subsequent partnerships with Jack Hill, Gary Lumley and Gareth Roberts have flourished, with the team enjoying the best defensive record in the league after 15 games, despite the enforced changes.

Most observers have commented that Robinson has taken on the mantle of leader with such aplomb and assuredness that it is hard to believe that he is still only 21 years of age. During the Nostell tie in the FA Vase, Robinson changed the course of the match with a goal that he started himself on the edge of his own box, culminating in an assured finish to cap a rampaging run.

With a remarkably calm approach for a 21-year old, Tom graduated from U18s football at Ripon to University football: while taking his degree at Newcastle University, he played for Team Northumbria. Having graduated this summer, he has moved back to his native Yorkshire, and joined the club alongside the McGrory brothers and Liam Ormsby, with whom he played at Harrogate.

Tom also recognises “a good set of lads” when he meets them, and is impressed by the structure of the club and, in particular, the professionalism of the management team.
