Under 9s struggle past Brayton to go four points clear

Pontefract Collieries U9s 1:0 Brayton U9s

Saturday 26th November, 2o11
Selby & District Junior Football League

A below par performance from The Colls U9s still saw them come away with victory and finish the year end 4 points clear at the top.

Anthony Bugge kept another clean sheet and was rarely troubeled with defenders Ben Mosby and James Mitchell holding firm. With wingers Will Harrison and Ryan Mateer flying down the flanks and Alex Giles dominant in midfield, Pontefract were always in control.

Elliott Rhodes as striker showed some great control and touches. The introduction of Liam Nicklin and Joe Morton didn’t change the shape of the team and they still carried on trying to play their football, but they struggled to open up the Brayton defence until a deflected goal from Giles gave him his 22nd of the season and claimed the three points. Rhodes took the referees M.O.M.

Due to sickness and injuries Ponte gave their worst performance of the season in this shocker at Brayton.

Defenders Josh Buttle and Anthony Bugge found it difficult against – at times – 4 or 5 strikers. Midfielders Joe Morton and Josh Mutonono found it difficult to get the ball down and play football in blustery conditions.

Striker Charlie Tennant put in plenty of hard work but found chances at a minimum.

Pontefract did score from an own goal, but still suffered their first defeat of the season.

Coaches Kevin Gill and Jamie Rhodes will now be looking for a response in next weeks’ friendly, as the team seek to return to the superb form that has characterised their season to date and put these below-par performances behind them.
