U9s beat Garforth Villa to set up table-topping derby

PONTEFRACT COLLIERIES U9S 1 V GARFORTH VILLA U9S 0

Colls warmed up for their top of table clash with Glasshoughton next week with a 1-0 victory against Garforth Villa on Saturday.

The scoreline does not reflect the dominance that Kev Gill and Jamie Rhodes’ boys enjoyed over their rivals: Lennon Athorn only had one save to make during the whole game. Defenders Ben Mosby and Liam Nicklin made some timely tackles, but otherwise spent most of the time joining in with the attacking play, as Ponte camped in their opponents’ half.

With the midfield trio of James Mitchell, Alex Giles and Elliott Rhodes  in total control and Will Harrison dominant up front, The Colls created a host of chances to score. However, they were up against Garforth’s goalie in superb form, and Ponte  struggled to make the breakthrough.

Eventually, Ponte were rewarded for their dominance when a superb move resulted in Will Harrisons excellent cross being expertly volleyed in by Elliott Rhodes, and The Colls had the victory their play deserved.

Giles took the Man of the Match award, against some stiff competition from his team-mates.

Another superb performance in the second game saw Ponte run out deserved winners.

The Colls showed some excellent finishing to smash 10 goals by Garforth. Goalkeepr Anthony Bugge again was a spectator during the game. With defenders Revie Hodgson making some crunching tackles, Garforth did not stand a chance.

Ponte’s very strong midfield of Josh Mutonono, Joe Morton and Ryan Mateer were a superb attacking force with Charlie Tennant playing his part as striker as well.

Goals from Morton (3), Mateer (2), Mutonono (2), Tennant (2) and Giles gave Ponte Colls a deserved victory, with Morton winning the Man of the Match award for his excellent all round game.
