Future of the Colls

Pontefract Collieries Football Club has a long and rich history, and are proud of their roots, heritage and links within the community. The committee and officials of the club passionately believe that the club is writing “tomorrow’s history”, and are focused on taking Pontefract’s leading club to new heights.

It is extremely rare that any great achievement has ever been achieved without a vision, and Pontefract Collieries FC is no different. At Ponte Colls we believe….

  • …that the historic town of Pontefract – and the surrounding area – is too big and important not to have a football league club.
It is our medium-term aim to gain Football League status within 10-12 years, by achieving a promotion every two years over this period. Once we have achieved that, we will review our targets!
  • …that football should be played in the best traditions of the game: skilfully, as a team game within which individual flair can flourish.
In other words, we do not subscribe to a “win at all costs” philosophy – rather, we believe that the game of football is truly beautiful, and that results are hollow without respect for the style of play, sporting values and aesthetic qualities.
  • …that our club should offer great opportunities and support for players, coaches and managers in the area to achieve their potential.
We are creating a “University of Football” at the club, putting resources into the development of coaches, to ensure that players are coached to the highest possible standards, and that our coaches are the best in the business.
  • …that the club should be a beacon of everything that is good in the game.
On and off the field, we are aiming to achieve the highest possible standards. Whether it is learning from best practice in the coaching and development of players (from Barcelona to Ajax to Brasilia!), or seeking to excel in all off-field activities in support of the playing of the game, the club is seeking to represent the highest possible standards, lead from the front, and set an example for others.
  • …that the club should be all-inclusive.
Football is about people! We believe that people of all races, genders, abilities and backgrounds should be given equal opportunities to enjoy the game. Whether this means developing the Pontefract Pirates or encouraging girls to enjoy structured football, we aim to provide a civic service which does not discriminate or exclude.
  • …that the club should be a focal point for the community, and a source of pride.
We are often told of the energising, unifying effects that a successful football team can have on a town – but we have not enjoyed this experience in Pontefract! In creating a special, successful club at Ponte Colls, we aim to give the community a source of pride, enjoyment and unity.

We are sure that our journey will be a fascinating one, with many twists and turns. However, with the support and involvement of the community, we are sure that it will be successful and fulfilling. The club welcomes people with ideas, energy and enthusiasm, who share in our belief in the future of the club and wish to contribute to this future.
