Ossett Town – Match Report
Goal Scorers – Neilson, Harris, Bartram, Foster (pictured striking the equaliser)
Following up last weeks thumping opening league win against Tingley,Colls were back in action at Ossett Town, in what turned out to be a fiercely fought thriller.
Played on the Unibond sides main pitch enabled colls to utilise the space, moving the ball around playing some high quality football.
It was the away side who made the breakthrough on the 15 minute mark, when Brad Harris found a yard of space just inside Towns penalty box and he kept his cool and fired the ball under the keeper to put his side 0-1 up, Colls upped the tempo and another sweeping move involving Nathan Perks (picture below) who turned his marker to send over a low cross into the path of Rob Neilson and his timely stike.
Further chances from Joe Locks lob and Brynn Fosters 2 long range strikes were inches away from increasing the lead, Colls then seemed to become a little complacent and allowed Ossett to ease their way into the game, and a hopeful ball from the home side had colls defender Brad Milner running shoulder to shoulder with a town striker going away from goal, and he was adjudged to have impeded the front man and a dubious penalty was awarded, much to the disbelief of the Colls team.
The penalty was taken sending keeper Steve Lumb the wrong way and made it 1-2, this gave Ossett a lift and shortly after a high ball was floated in and a rare defensive mix-up allowed Towns winger space at the far post and he slotted in the equaliser, and on balance of play and chances created colls felt hard done by,however it stayed 2-2 at the break.
Second half saw both teams come out with a steely determination, and the pace of the game lifted with colls launching a wave of attacking football, but the big and agile home keeper was in sensational form pulling off a string of blnding saves to deny the visitors time and time again, and he inspired Town to claw their way back and against the run of play Ossett took the lead and made it 3-2.
This didn’t deter Colls and a tactical switch involving the tireless Gavin Moore who moved up alongside skipper Neilson in midfield and substitute Steve Chappell dropping into defence, enabled wide players Adam Bartram and Brynn Foster to cause havoc freeing strike pair Perks and Lock to continuously press the home defence, but the goal of the game came from a flash of brilliance 18 yards out on the angle when Foster hit a thunderous dipping volley into the top corner, this time giving the resilient Town keeper no chance to make it 3-3,setting up a thrilling and dramatic last 8 minutes.
A chance for Lock shortly after the re-start was scrambled off the line,a curling strike from Perks looked to be heading for the top corner but once again the keeper pulled off a magnificent one handed save, that was followed by a 30 yard screamer from Foster which re-bounded back off the crossbar, Colls were now thinking “what do we have to do to win the game”but with 2 minutes of normal time left on the clock came the defining moment, when another Perks strike was parried back into play by the keeper and the inform Bartram was first to re-act and he crashed the ball into the roof of the net to give Colls a fantastic win.
Centre back Matty Carter had another powerful and commanding display at the heart of defence alongside Brad Milner and Jamie Rollinson kept his fine start to the season up at full back and Matthew Brook came on and did a great job assisting the defence, and keeper Stevie Lumb looked sound and secure to make it 2 wins from 2 for Colls.
Ponte maintained their 100% start to the season in this Premier league clash making it 3 wins from 3.
The away side had to overcome a difficult physical encounter, and had to work extremely hard to overcome their opponents.
On an uneven and slopey pitch and several players absent due to work commitments colls soon got to grips with the task in hand,by getting the ball down and playing their usual fluent football regardless of the conditions.
Around the 20 minute mark striker Joe Lock sprung the offside trap, raced away and converted a cool finish wide of the keeper to fire his side 1 up,the visitors continued to surge forward and shortly after on the counter attack, Brad Harris recieved the ball just inside his own half and hit a superb pass into Nathan Perks, and his first time deft flick-on sent his strike partner Lock away again, and he smashed the ball home for his second and colls led 0-2.
Just before the break Gawber were awarded a disputed corner kick, and the set-peice was headed in to pull it back to 1-2 and it remained so at half-time.
Second half colls had to weather a real physical test from the home side, who were trying desperately to get back into the game, but with the outstanding Rob Neilson in the thick of things in midfield dominating the play, inspired his team to raise their game further and on the hour mark Adam Bartram’s beautfully flighted cross picked out Perks at the far post, and he guided a sublime cushioned header into the opposite corner of the net to put colls further ahead at 1-3.
The home side now were frantically trying to hit back, but colls defence of centre backs Matty Carter and Brad Milner and full backs Jamie Rollinson and Steve Chappell who was making his first full start, were like a brick wall and foiled every attack that Gawber threw at them, with some tremendous defending in front of keeper Stevie Lumb who was rarely tested.
As the game entered the last ten minutes another lightning counter attack from colls saw Perks hit a shot which rebounded off a Gawber defender into the path of Brynn Foster 20 yards out,and he struck one of his trademark pile drivers into the roof of the net which didn’t even give the home keeper time to move, to make it 1-4 to cap off an impressive hard fought victory.
A fantastic team effort was slightly marred by an injury to Milner which hopefully is not too serious, however subs Matthew Brooke and Charlie Clark came on and didn’t put a foot wrong to ensure colls kept up their fine start to the Charles Rice Supreme Premier League campaign.
